Terms of use

The guides on this site are general information for owners of general, specialty and group dental practices, and the estimator's range is rough, not an appraisal. Requesting a valuation does not make you a client or commit you to selling your practice.

By using this website you agree to these terms.

General information, not advice

The guides, figures and examples on this site are general information about how dental practices are sold to associates, other dentists and DSOs. They are not legal, tax, accounting or investment advice.

The guide to who can own a dental practice, for example, summarizes Ohio's rule that shares of a dental professional association may be sold only to another Ohio-licensed dentist (Ohio Revised Code 1785.07, effective April 10, 1998). How to sell a dental practice explains that in a typical asset sale of a practice, you and the buyer both report the split of the price on IRS Form 8594 (instructions revised November 2021). Those pages describe what the source says, not how it applies to your practice.

Before acting on anything here, take ownership and contract questions to healthcare counsel in your state: whether your buyer may own a dental practice there, what a DSO's management agreement would let it control, and how far a non-compete can reach.

Ask your CPA about the tax side: how the price is split between goodwill and equipment such as operatory chairs and imaging units, and how much of any gain on that equipment is treated as ordinary income because of depreciation allowed or allowable on it.

Is the estimator's range an appraisal?

No. The valuation estimator applies published ranges to the numbers you enter. By default that is the middle half of BizBuySell's SDE multiples for dental practices sold from 2021 to 2025, shown beside its revenue multiples for practices sold in the same years, as a cross-check.

If you enter EBITDA for a general dentistry practice or dental group with 2 or more locations, or one that runs with little or none of your own chair time, it applies an EBITDA range instead. That range is one advisor's: the multiples FOCUS Investment Banking, a sell-side advisor, gives in a March 2026 whitepaper for general dentistry practices joining a DSO as add-ons, which the firm labels for educational purposes only. Otherwise it asks you to use SDE.

Which range applies, and where the location cutoff sits, is this site's own judgment. Beyond that choice, your answers on practice type, hygiene, payer mix and your own chair time add written notes but do not move the numbers; how the estimator works explains why. The estimator cannot see your lease, equipment or books, and ADA guidance on selling a practice lists them among the records a seller may need for due diligence.

When it can produce one, its result is a rough, indicative range. It is not an appraisal, a formal valuation, a fairness opinion or an offer from a dentist, a DSO or anyone else to buy your practice, and no one should rely on it for a lending, tax, legal or purchase decision. If your buyer finances the purchase with an SBA 7(a) loan, the lender may not use a business valuation prepared for you or the buyer (SOP 50 10 8.1, effective October 1, 2026).

Does requesting a valuation make you a client?

Requesting a valuation or joining the buyer list does not create a client, brokerage, advisory or agency relationship, and does not oblige you to sell, buy or sign anything, including a DSO's or a dentist buyer's letter of intent. Requesting a valuation does not list your practice, and its details are not shared with a dentist, a DSO or any other buyer without your permission.

The valuation form asks for no patient information. Do not send patient names, charts or X-rays through this site.

Where do the figures on this site come from?

Market figures on this site come from the published sources cited on the page where they appear. Those sources were last checked on October 14, 2026, and some are undated or cover earlier years. BizBuySell's dental practice benchmarks carry no publication date and cover practices sold from 2021 to 2025. Worked examples and estimator results are illustrations calculated from those figures, not data.

Sources can be revised or wrong, and rules change. SBA's lender procedures for a 7(a) loan to a dentist buyer, for example, are now in SOP 50 10 8.1, effective October 1, 2026. Which version covers a loan depends on when it was submitted and when it received an SBA loan number, and for a loan already in process the lender confirms it (SBA Information Notice 5000-880695, August 14, 2026). The site may be updated or corrected at any time.
